Garbage, Recycling, & Yard Debris

Household waste removal including garbage and curbside recycling are provided on a contract basis with a private waste hauler. Garbage and recycling is a required service for all residential and commercial utility customers inside city limits and is included in the utility bill. All residential customers are required to have at least one (1) garbage roll cart and one (1) recycling roll cart. All commercial customers are required to have at least two (2) garbage roll carts and one (1) recycling bin, unless a written request has been approved by Town staff to only allow one (1) garbage roll cart. 

If a commercial customer would like to request a reduction in the number of garbage roll carts at their place of business, they are to submit a written request to:

Household garbage pick-up is every Wednesday beginning at 7 AM. Recycling roll carts are picked up every other Wednesday, alternating between the east and west sides of town; dividing point being the railroad right-of-way. All roll carts must be by the curb no later than 7:00 AM. If a holiday falls on a Wednesday, a schedule change will be posted on the website, local newspaper, and in the Town Hall.

Black roll carts are for normal household garbage only: 

  • No yard debris                                                                                   
  • No leaves, limbs or brush
  • No grass clippings
  • No rocks
  • No hot ashes or charcoal
  • No chemicals or hazardous waste

Blue roll carts are for recyclables only: 

  • Plastic containers #1-7 (no motor oils)
  • Newsprint with inserts and magazines
  • Soda cans, steel cans (soup, tuna) and plastic bottles
  • Office paper and residential mixed paper (junk mail/catalogs)
  • Juice boxes and other drink packages
  • Paper egg cartons and paper grocery bags
  • Clean pizza boxes and cereal/food boxes
  • Wrapping paper
  • Aluminum foil
  • Clean aluminum baking pans (no cast aluminum pots or pans)
  • Clear, green, blue, or brown glass

Yard debris and white goods are picked up every Friday (weather permitting) by Burgaw Public Works Department beginning at 7:30 AM. The Public Works Department will pick up the following items: 

  • Yard debris (limbs, leaves, brush, etc.)
  • Cardboard
  • Plastic containers
  • Empty paint cans
  • Appliances
  • Furniture
