Household Garbage and Recycling Service

The Town of Burgaw, through a private contractor, provides once-a-week residential curbside collection of roll-out containers and recycling bins. Residents sign up for garbage and recycling service when requesting water service with Customer Service at the Town Hall. See the chart at the bottom of this page for proper disposal.

Schedule for Garbage and Recycling

Garbage and recyclables are picked up every Wednesday by Onslow Container Service. Roll carts and recycling bins must be placed at the curb by 7:00 A.M. each Wednesday morning. The automated collection service has specific placement for your roll cart and recycling bin. Place your roll cart at the curb with the pushing handle facing your home. Your recycling bin should be placed at least three (3) feet away from your roll cart. The roll cart and recycling bin should be at least three (3) feet away from obstructions such as mail boxes, power poles, parked cars, or other items. All material is to be placed in the roll cart; extra material should be placed on top of cart. Roll carts should not be left at curbside past Friday. Fees

Fees for garbage and recycling service are part of the utility bill, which is mailed during the last week of each month for the previous month’s service. The bill is due by the 10th of each month. Please see the section Utility Bills for more information.

Recyclables

Burgaw residents can recycle the following materials by placing them in the recycling bin that is provided by the Town. The following materials must be placed in the recycling bin for pickup on the same day as garbage collection.

Glass
Accepted: Clear, brown, and green containers.
Not accepted: Ceramic or porcelain cups and plates, drinking glasses or stemware, heat resistant ovenware, light bulbs or window pane.
How to recycle glass: Remove metal tops and rinse all containers. Paper labels need not be removed.

Aluminum and Steel Cans
Accepted: Any aluminum drink containers and steel food cans.
Not accepted: Pie pans or foil, cans that have contained hazardous waste (oil, insecticide, paint, etc.).
How to recycle metal cans: Empty and rinse.

Newspapers and Magazines
Accepted: Newspapers and all inserts that come with them; magazines with stapled bindings only, catalogs (2 inches or less), phone books, and soft cover books.
Not accepted: Magazines with glued bindings and books.

Plastics
Accepted: #1 and #2 plastic (look on bottom to identify)
Not accepted: Any plastic containers that contained hazardous waste (antifreeze, motor oil, etc.), grocery bags, sandwich bags, 5 gallon buckets, caps, or lids.
How to recycle plastics: Discard lids, rinse all containers and crush.

Corrugated Cardboard and Chipboard
Accepted: From residential customers only. Un-waxed corrugated cardboard (flat on outsides and wavy in middle) and chipboard (cereal, shoe and laundry detergent boxes). Not accepted: Food contaminated cardboard.
How to recycle cardboard: All material must be removed from inside boxes; remove excess tape and packing list; cut or tear into pieces no larger than 3 feet x 3 feet, in limited quantities, and neatly stack flattened cardboard under recycling bin.

Junk Mail and Paper
Accepted: General mail from solicitations, envelopes without plastic windows, writing paper, office paper, colored paper, computer paper, brochures, file folders, and paper bags.
Not accepted: Window envelopes, papers with adhesives, stickers, plastic inserts.
